오늘은 부슬부슬 비가 내리네요.

오늘 소개해드릴 연설문은

바로 그 유명한

링컨의 '게티스버그' 연설문입니다!

지도자들의 연설문에 가장 많이 인용되었던 연설문이기도 하죠.

"Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."

"87년전, 우리의 선조들은 자유와 모든 인간들은 평등하다는 제안 속에서 고안되고 바쳐진 나라를 세웠습니다."

  "Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure. 

We are met on a great battlefield of that war."

"지금 우리는 그런 나라가 혹은, 그렇게 세워지고 바쳐진 나라가 오래 갈 수 있는지를 시험하는 

거대한 내전에 참전하고 있습니다.

그 전쟁의 거대한 전쟁터에서 우리는 만났습니다."

  "We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that this nation might live.

 1863년 당시에는 얼마나 파격적인 연설이었을까요?

게다가 연설이 불과 2~3분 밖에 되지 않았지만

그 안에 말하고자 하는 모든 것을 넣은 명문인 것 같아요!

하지만 150여년이 지난 지금까지 

평등이 지켜지고 있는지는 아직 의문입니다.

In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. 

We risk very little yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. 

We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read.

다방면으로 보면, 비평이라는 일은 쉽다. 

우리는 위험을 무릅쓸 일이 별로 없고, 우리의 판단에 바쳐진 사람들의 일과 그들 자신들의 위에서 군림하는 우리의 지위를 즐긴다. 

우리는 쓰기에도, 읽기에도 재밌는 부정적인 비평을 통해 자란다.

But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so.

그러나 우리 비평가들이 마주해야 하는 쓰디 쓴 진실은 거대한 하나의 획 안에서, 사소하기 짝이 없는 것들이 우리가 지적하는 것보다 훨신 의미가 있을 수도 있다는 것이다. 

 But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. 

The world is often unkind to new talent, new creations, the new needs friends. 

하지만 비평가도 위험을 감수해야 할 때가 있으니, 그 때란 새로운 것을 발견하고 그것을 보호할 때다.

 세상은 가끔 새로운 것들에 친절하지 않다. 

 Last night, I experienced something new, an extraordinary meal from a singularly unexpected source. 

To say that both the meal and its maker have challenged my preconceptions about fine cooking is a gross understatement. 

지난 밤, 나는 어떤 새로운 것을 경험했는데, 기대도 하지 못했던 곳에서 부터 제공되어 경험한 놀라운 식사였다. 

그 식사와 요리사 모두 훌륭한 요리에 대해 내가 가지고 있던 선입견에 도전했다.

They have rocked me to my core. 

그들은 내 신념을 뒤흔들었다.

In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for Chef Gusteau’s famous motto: Anyone can cook. 

But I realize, only now do I truly understand what he meant.

과거, 나는 '누구든 요리를 할 수 있다' 는 요리사 구스토의 모토에 대해 업신여기는 것을 마다하지 않았다. 

그러나 지금에 와서야 그가 진정으로 의미했던 것이 무엇이었는지 깨닫는다.

 Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere. 

누구나 훌륭한 예술가는 될 수 없지만 훌륭한 예술가는 어디에서든지 나올 수 있다.

It is difficult to imagine more humble origins than those of the genius now cooking at Gusteau’s, 

who is, in this critic’s opinion, nothing less than the finest chef in France.

 I will be returning to Gusteau’s soon, hungry for more.

이 비평가가 감히 말하지만, 프랑스에서 가장 나은 요리사보다 부족한 것이 없는, 

지금 구스토에서 요리를 하고 있는 존재보다 더 초라한 존재를 상상하기 어렵다. 

나는 구스토에 다시 방문할 것이다. 더 먹고싶다.

독하게 비평만 하던 이고가 쓴 글인 만큼 

다가오는 감동도 컸습니다.

진실이란 쓰라리게 아플 수도 있지만

먹먹하게 감동적일 수 있기도 한 것 같아요.

"The point I’m trying to make is that I am the most unpleasant, rude, ignorant, and all-around obnoxious arsehole that anyone could possibly have the misfortune to meet. 

I am dismissive of the virtuous, unaware of the beautiful, and uncomprehending in the face of the happy. “

"제가 말하고자 했던 요지는 저는 가장 불쾌하고 무례하며, 무지하고 전반적으로 아주 기분 나쁜 멍청이로서 누구든 저를 만난다는 것은 아마도 불행한 일일 것 입니다.

 So if I didn’t understand I was being asked to be best man, it is because I never expected to be anyone’s best friend.
